Cupcake Recipe and Procedural Writing

Today we mixed learning and fun together during our writing period. The students observed as I made cupcake batter and they recorded each step down. After the cupcake batter was made, the students then wrote a procedural piece on the instructions to making cupcakes. Once the children finished their writing, they were rewarded with decorating their cupcakes and eating them!:) A job well done and tasty too!

Cupcake Recipe

* 2 1/4 cups of flour
* 1 1/3 cup of sugar
* 3 tsp baking powder
* 1/2 tsp salt
* 1/2 cup shortening
* 1 cup of milk
* 1 tsp vanilla
* 2 large eggs

Preheat oven to 350'. Line cupcake pan with paper liners. Add the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and shortening together in a bowl. Add the milk and use a hand mixer to blend all ingredients for a minute. Then add vanilla and the eggs to the batter. Once again, mix batter for it to be smooth. Fill the cupcake container 1/2 - 2/3 full. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until done. Cool and then add frosting and enjoy!:)
