Daily Five Program
In my class I have been introducing the Daily Five Literacy Program. It is a helpful way for children to practice and strengthen their reading/writing skills in a variety of ways each day. The five methods are: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing and Word Work. The students do all five areas each day during our Language block and take the initiative to choose which order they would like to complete the five areas. This program teaches the students independence and also gives them the freedom to decide what their learning Language block will be scheduled like. It is an effective way to provide students with hands on learning in reading and writing. Last week I introduced Read to Self and Read to Someone. The students have their own book bins with a variety of books at their reading level. Tomorrow I will be introducing Word Work. In Word Work, the children have many different centres that can be used to practice creating words involving magnetic letters, whiteboards, play dough and chalk. The children work on creating a variety of words and sentences using the reading strategies we have been learning in class. This will be so helpful in putting what they learn about spelling and letter sounds into action! I am sure they will all greatly benefit from the Daily Five Literacy program.
