This past week in Grade 1...
This past week, our class has been working on patterning in Math. The children learned about different attributes in making patterns (colours, shapes, sizes) and then had fun creating their own. In Language, we are continuing to review letter sounds and sounding out simple words. The students are also printing their letters in their spelling books. The children have been learning reading strategies such as chunking (finding a little word they know in a bigger word --eg: stand), using the pictures to make meaning of the words they do not know, and also learning to back up and reread to be sure they understand what they read. We also started our Social Studies unit and talked about our families and each student created a life timeline. A few reminders: Please be sure you are initialing in your child's agenda and reading log every day! Also, children should have indoor shoes and it would be useful to have a water bottle that can stay at their desks. Upcoming events: Curriculum Night will be on September 26th (more details to come!) and our Terry Fox Run will be on September 27th!
